Of all the paths you take in life
Make sure a few of them are dirt...

I'm heading to Africa in May as part of the Hunger Project Australia, with 20 women from across Australia (most of whom I've never met) to work with village people who are living in severe hunger and poverty...in the most rural places imaginable.

This song is full of soul and is dedicated to my late Dad, the brightest star in the sky. Dad and I always connected on a musical and creative level with many a lazy day spent spinning records, strumming guitar, playing piano, dancing, laughing and singing in the kitchen in our pyjamas! A pianist since a young girl, Dad always nurtured and encouraged my musical ability and instilled in me a deep love for all types of music.

I've never been much of a singer but I decided to write my very first song to a) take a risk, try something new and challenge myself b) make Dad proud c) do one last activity to raise more funds for the Hunger Project.

Little did I know what an emotional journey this would be, stirring up memories of Dad and our shared love of music and creativity. It was intense to say the least.

I wrote the lyrics and spent countless hours banging my head against the piano until my gorgeous little brother Rob stepped in and wrote the melody and rescued me. I sang (albeit nervously) and Rob patiently guided me throughout the process (I reiterate - I am not a singer).

It's raw, it's real. It's me.

Don't listen to my voice so much as listen to my heart.

The song is about the stark contrast of living in East Africa surrounded by hunger, poverty and resilience beyond belief. It's about the power of the people and the joy they find in life, whilst still facing the everyday harsh conditions of life on the land.

I'm counting on you to help me cross the finishing line to my personal quest and encourage you to download this track, close your eyes and be transported. Pretend you are seated in the dry dusty dirt beside me, beneath the heat of the African sun listening to the beat of the drums...

LYRICS - AFRICAN LULLABY

Seated in the dusty dirt
shadows in the sunset haze
Hear the young babies cry
the birds circle above

The children are all dancing
chasing the wind
Unsure of the direction
The next gust will bring

Hear them sing
The beating of the drum
Hear them cry
Under the African sun

The sky's a blazing fire
swirling reds and orange
the african sun sets
cold air's on its way

The sky, now lit with stars
A glow over the vast land
Hope within - help isn't far

Hear them sing
The beating of the drum
Hear them cry
Under the African sun
